Creed III - The Number 1 Movie in America and Available in Spanish on TheaterEars
Pop the bottle of champagne for MGM and its corporate owners at Amazon. Creed III is an unquestioned success. Creed III is the first #1 movie in America for MGM under Amazon’s ownership, which purchased MGM back in 2021 for a cool $8.45 billion.
This weekend, as reported by Variety, Creed III opened to over $58.6 million besting estimates that had the film between $45-50 million. It’s the highest opening of the year for a non-Marvel movie, as well as the highest debut of all-time for a sports movie. With such a strong start, Creed III looks to be the top grossing film of the Creed franchise besting Creed ($109.8M) and Creed II ($115.7M).
This is an amazing performance for a movie that some executives and critics thought should have gone direct to streaming via Amazon Prime. Movies that followed that path such as Thirteen Days and Sylvester Stallon’s Samaritan were lost in the shuffle of the thousands of titles available via streaming, whereas Creed was the knockout winner, as the main event to this weekend’s box office.
As a third installment in the Creed franchise, Creed III delivers an impressive continuation of the story of Adonis Creed, the son of legendary boxer Apollo Creed. Michael B. Jordan once again shines in his role as Adonis, portraying the character's complex emotions and struggles with ease. The film is the third installment in the Creed series and a sequel to Creed II, which was released in 2018.
The movie features a new director, as Ryan Coogler, who directed the first Creed film, and Steven Caple Jr., who directed Creed II, will not be returning for Creed III. Instead, Michael B. Jordan has stepped into the director's chair for the first time in his career.
In an interview with Deadline, Michael B. Jordan spoke about his experience directing Creed III, saying, "It's a different kind of challenge, but I'm excited about it. I'm learning every single day on set, and I'm really proud of the team that I have around me."
Tessa Thompson, who plays Bianca Taylor, Adonis Creed's wife, has also expressed her excitement for the movie. In an interview with Collider, she said, "I'm really excited for what's to come. I think Michael [B. Jordan] is an incredibly talented person, and I think he's going to do an amazing job with Creed III."
The movie takes a different direction from its predecessors, with a focus on Adonis' personal life and relationships, as well as his journey to self-discovery. This is a refreshing change from the typical boxing movie formula and allows the audience to connect with Adonis on a deeper level. In an interview with IGN, Michael B. Jordan said, "I think it's important to... let Adonis' journey kind of take its own course."
Of course, there are still plenty of intense and well-choreographed boxing scenes that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The fights are brutal and realistic, and the cinematography captures the action in a way that makes the audience feel like they're in the ring with Adonis.
The supporting cast also delivers standout performances, particularly Tessa Thompson as Adonis' love interest Bianca and Phylicia Rashad as Adonis' mentor and mother figure, Mary Anne Creed. The new addition of Jonathan Majors as Adonis' opponent, a rising boxing star named Duke, adds an interesting dynamic to the film and showcases Majors' impressive acting skills.
Overall, Creed III is a powerful and emotional film that explores themes of family, legacy, and identity. With strong performances, stunning visuals, and gripping boxing scenes, it is a worthy addition to the Creed franchise and a must-see for fans of the series.
Even better, for fans who want to take their family members or friends who prefer to hear the movies in Spanish, Creed III is available in Spanish via the TheaterEars app. Download the TheaterEars app on either the App Store or Google Play for free today.
