Best Movies of Summer 2022

You’ve been good. You’ve waited patiently. First there was Covid-19, then there was the lockdowns. Movie theaters were shut down. It didn’t look good. But you waited patiently.

Then in 2021, we started to reopen, but then we had Delta and Omicron, which gave us nothing but uncertainty. Again, you waited patiently.

Then came the summer of 2022, the reward for all of your patience. In what will go down as one of the great summers for movies of all time, this past summer was a real treat for moviegoers.

Movie studios held back their best product so that those movies could have a true theatrical receipt. After being at home for almost two years, people were excited to get back into a movie theater and enjoy the communal experience that people have enjoyed for a century.

Here are our best movies of Summer 2022:

Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness

This is the movie that kicked off the Summer of 2022 with a bang. After December 2021’s box-office smash hit, Spider-Man: No Way Home, MCU fans were waiting with baited breath for the highly anticipated follow up. While Spider-Man: No Way Home, introduced us to the multiverse, it was Dr. Strange that really helped us explore and understand the multiverse. There were so many twists and surprises. We even were treated to a multiverse appearance of Patrick Stewart as Professor X, and John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic (maybe a tease of what’s come?). For our biggest fans, the movie even opens with Dr. Strange speaking Spanish!!!

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

For close to 30 years, audiences have enjoyed the thrill-ride odyssey that is the Jurassic Park/World Saga. From Laura Dern to Jeff Goldblum in the original trilogy, to Bryce-Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt in the new trilogy, audiences have been invested in these characters that we’ve all come to know and love, in addition to our pre-historic friends (the dinosaurs!!!). Fallen Kingdom but a nice bow on the saga and was a fitting send to the series.

Top Gun: Maverick

The #1 movie of the summer, and one of the top #5 box office hits in US history, Top Gun: Maverick was the movie that Paramount pictures held on to, and for good reason. After 2 years in lock down, audiences wanted to be entertained. They wanted red-meat, good old-fashioned American fun. We wanted to see the US as the good guys, heroes we can all enjoy. This was the movie that didn’t require too much thought. It is what it is, and that’s two and a half hours of fun at the movie theater. Judging by the last 30 minutes of Top Gun: Maverick, we also have an idea of what the next Tom Cruise Mission Impossible films might look like, which will include being shot in space!!!

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Every hero needs an origin story. This is the one for our favorite animated villain, Gru. From the Despicable Me Trilogy, we’ve come to know Gru and his lovable Minions. Now we get to see how Gru started on his path to being a supervillain and how he came to work with the Minions. Minions entertained audiences and become the number 1 animated movie of the summer with over $300million in US gross box office receipts.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Taika Waititi gets what a Thor movie should be. While earlier entries into the Thor saga were more dramatic, Thor: Ragnarok and the latest entry Thor: Love and Thunder redefine the Thor saga. While it seems that every MCU movie is highly anticipated, audiences seem to have the most fun at Thor movies. While audiences were treated to see even more of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) than they’ve ever seen before (wink, wink), we got to see more from stars Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie) and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster).

Nope

From the mind of Jordan Peele, comes the next great horror/suspense film of for this generation. Peele was behind the reinvigoration of the genre with breakout hits such as Get Out and Us. Starring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Black Panther)

Elvis

Viva Elvis! The greatest pop musician of the 20th Century finally gets his story told on the big screen. Endorsed by his wife Priscilla Presley and daughter Lisa Marie Presley, the movie is a love letter to the famout star. Elvis Presley was in many ways the first modern pop star. He engineering a new industry of popular culture. When Elvis hit the scene, people wanted to not only hear his music, but they wanted to see his pictures, learn about his personal life, and know everything that they could about him. In many ways E! Entertainment, and our modern popular culture traces its roots back to Elvis and the interest in him.

Lightyear

Lighyear is the story of Buzz Lightyear the character that inspired the toy that was prominently featured in the Toy Story saga. Voiced by Chris Evans, Lightyear tells a new chapter in th story of Buzz Lightyear. Lightyear performed well as one of the top animated movies of the summer and is not available on Disney+.

Bullet Train

Brad Pitt. That’s all you need to know. The movie has Brad Pitt. One of the true movie stars of our era, Brad Pitt injects so much excitement and interest into this film, that audiences are flocking to. Even with an R rating interest is strong in the film. If you are looking for a movie to watch this weekend, don’t miss Bullet Train.
