Movies in Spanish: 10 Best

The Spanish language can have such an impact on how a movie is received. A translated word can have a totally different meaning than the original word. Also the way an actor chooses to deliver that word in Spanish can vary as movies are dubbed and translated plays a big role. Culturally, Spanish speakers are more expressive than others, so dialogue gets expressed in different ways.

At TheaterEars, we are movie lovers at our core. So when we say that a movie is good, trust us. We’ve been at the heart of Spanish language in-theater movie going since 2017. So here are our staff’s top 10 best movies in Spanish.

The Grinch (2018)

This was an easy one for the staff to include in the top 10. Who doesn’t love the Dr. Seuss classic where the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes in one day. Christmastime has special meaning for almost everyone these days and the new Ilumination entry into the Dr. Seuss canon was a smash hit. What really separates this movie for us is the vocal talent of Eugenio Derbez. While the English language Benedict Cumberbatch Grinch was snarky, the Derbez version was joyful and ebullient. It brought a totally different dynamic to the film. It’s one of the few dub performances, that at least rivals the original and some might say even surpasses it. The Grinch with the vocal talents of Eugenio Derbez is sure to remain in the movies in Spanish Hall of Fame for a very long time.

Avengers: Endgame

When you think movies in Spanish, Avengers: Endgame doesn’t necessarily come to mind. But make no mistake, Avengers: Endgame is one of the finer cinematic experiences in Spanish that has ever been produced. The sound quality is impeccable. The cast from top to bottom is first-rate. On top of it all, this movie marks the conclusion of Phase 3 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It was a fitting end to see our favorite characters like Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow have their storylines completed. The movie also sets up Phase 4 of the MCU which is led by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Aladdin (2019)

This movie is a sleeper, no doubt. But the Guy Ritchie live-action version of Aladdin was a crowd pleaser. While staying true to the 1993 original animated classic, Guy Ritchie put his own twist on Aladdin and brought these characters to life.

F9

Action. Action. Action. F9 packs an action punch like few movies can these days. With all of the cool cars, exotic cities from around the world, and the central theme of family, the Fast and the Furious Saga has entertained audiences for over 20 years. In addition to incredible voice acting, F9 has amazing sound effects and crashes. To hear these in TheaterEars spatial audio is a real treat.

Coco

Coco will always hold a special place in our hearts. For TheaterEars, it was the movie that got us off the ground. it launched us into the marketplace and into the consciousness of Spanish speakers around the country. A mark of a great movie is when it becomes part of the culture. In that way, Coco is more than just a movie. Every October & November when Mexican cultures start to celebrate the Day of the Dead, the movie Coco is part of that. Kids watch it and learn about their heritage and their families. Coco is part of community festivals and continues to live on well beyond its release.

Aquaman

Aquaman marks the arrival of global phenomenon Jason Momoa. Far removed from his modelling and Baywatch days, Momoa is now a legit global superstar, and a member of the Justice League. This origins story of Aquaman also features Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe. With the rest of the DC Universe up in the air, make sure that you enjoy Momoa’s breakthrough performance in this film.

Bad Boys For Life

Miami. Will Smith. What could go wrong? Audiences loved the return of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to the Bad Boys franchise. Joined by newcomers Kate del Castillo and Eiza González, Bad Boys for Life brings real Latino flavor to the Miami crime scene. Blowup a few cars, some boats, and set it in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and you’ve got yourself a hit movie.

Jumanji (2017)

The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan star in his mega-hit reboot. Jumanji is the most fun you will have watching a movie. It features razor sharp comedy and a hilarious budding bromance between Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Their constant back and forth will have you rolling on the floor laughing. Also featuring Nick Jonas, Jumanji was textbook study in how to breathe new life into a beloved classic.

Hobbs & Shaw

Dwayne Johnson, more affectionately known as “The Rock”, has established himself as the world’s biggest superstar. Hobbs & Shaw only cemented that status as the first ever spinoff to the highly successful saga of The Fast and The Furious. Joined by Jason Statham, Hobbs and Shaw reprise their Fast Saga roles in a crowd pleasing action movie that also pays tribute to Johnson’s Samoan heritage.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom

Big dinosaurs and big problems. Although a familiar concept, Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom does not disappoint. With stellar performances from Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt, Fallen Kingdom is a worth entry into the Jurassic World series.
