TheaterEars Top Movies of 2019
2019 was a great year for movies on TheaterEars. It featured some of the biggest blockbusters on the planet with breakout movies such as Avengers: Endgame, Joker, Aladdin and more. 2019 saw over half a million users on the TheaterEars app, the premier app for watching movies at the movie theater in Spanish.
Below are a few of our selected top movies of 2019 (in no particular order):
Hustlers
Hustlers was one of the surprise breakout movies of 2019 that wildly exceeded expectations. Originally projected to open at $8 million gross for opening weekend, Hustlers opened at a whopping $33.2 million on opening weekend, quadrupling original projections. Led by strong female cast featuring Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, Lizzo, Cardi B, and more Hustlers packed a punch that had audiences wanting more.
Our favorite Jenny from the Block, even gave us a special shoutout before the movie opened.
Hobbs & Shaw
If you were craving more Fast & Furious action at the cinema, Hobbs & Shaw definitely delivered. Starring Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham in their titular roles, Hobbs & Shaw combined the action you’d come to expect from a Fast & Furious movie with The Rock and Statham’s signature sense of comedy.
Dwayne Johnson even sat down with our very own Rosa Gamazo and shared with her that this was the hardest movie that he ever made.
Avengers: Endgame
This was the biggie. Now the #1 highest grossing film of all-time, Avenger: Endgame did not disappoint. It brought closure to our favorite characters such as Iron Man and Captain America as the finale to the legendary Marvel Cinematic Universe of 23 films. There are few box office records that Avengers: Endgame does not hold. It would be easier to write a list of records they do not hold than a list of the ones they did. This movie was earth shattering for movie theaters. In many cases, movie theaters couldn’t add shows fast enough to meet the demand for moviegoers who wanted to see the conclusion of Phase 3 of the MCU grossing $2.798 billion worldwide.
Joker
This isn’t your ordinary comic book movie. However, that’s what makes the Joker one of the breakout hits of 2019. On a budget of $55 million, the movie grossed $1.078 billion at the global box office becoming the number 1 R-rated movie of all time. The film features an Academy-Award winning performance of Best Actor, Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Arthur Fleck aka The Joker. This dark tale is one that moviegoers will never forget. With movie this good, does anyone really believe that there will not be a sequel to this instant classic?
Jumanji The Next Level
This movie came as no surprise to many. It was hilariously funny. It brought back the Dynamic foursome of Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan that had audiences laughing out loud during this follow up to their surprise 2017 smash Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle.
Aladdin
Audiences were treated to "A Whole New World’ with the 2019 blockbuster Aladdin. Disney was able to masterfully bring the magic of the animated original to the new live-action version for this new generation. With a epic dance numbers, fabulously choreographed fight scenes, and a standout performance from Will Smith at Genie, Aladdin was a hit with TheaterEars audiences nationwide.
