Avatar: The Way of Water Projected to have $83 Million Christmas Weekend
Avatar The Way of Water is still the undisputed king of the box office. After hauling in $134 during its opening weekend, industry analysts are projecting Avatar The Way of Water to take in $83 million during this long Christmas 4-day weekend.
Despite having the benefit of the 4 day weekend, Avatar The Way of Water is facing some headwinds. Starting on Friday most of the country is experiencing a once in a generation winter storm. Already over a million are without power in the midwest and thousands of flights have been cancelled out of top airports such as Chicago O’Hare.
Reports are also coming in of cinema closures in cities like Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Portland, Oregon.
If not for these wild cards, Avatar The Way Of Water may have been on its way to a $100 million opening weekend.
All in all, by the end of Monday Avatar should be somewhere around $280 million dollars of domestic box office gross.
While going up against Avatar: The Way of Water is no easy task, the folks at Universal Pictures have expertly played their hand with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. First they opened their family friendly movie on a Tuesday getting an early beat on the weekend, when many kids have off the entire week for Christmas. Even in a tough environment, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish should have a 6-day haul of $24.1 million for the Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek led film.
The other two films rounding out this Christmas week’s new releases are Sony’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and Paramount’s Babylon.
So far the Whitney Houston biopic is scoring big with audiences approving of it over 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film is projected to take in some $9 million over the 4 day weekend.
Meanwhile, the star studded film Babylon looks to take in somewhere north of $10 million. The Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie film has already been receiving critical acclaim with 5 Golden Globe nominations.
