How to Watch Movies in Spanish at Home - Cine En Español En Casa
We live in a new reality. Post Covid-19, we have different habits. We consume media differently. We come together as a family differently.
Usually, families would all get together and go to the movies on the weekend, bridging generational gaps of young and old. For about 2 hours, all members of the family can become lost in magical land where they can experience life through someone else’s perspective.
However, that movie theater experience is becoming fewer and further in between. More and more people are watching movies at home.
On that note, more and more movie studios are releasing movies at home, and new ones at that.
In the old days you had to wait 3-4 months after opening weekend before you could watch a movie like F9 (Fast & Furious 9), Black Widow, Space Jam: A New Legacy, or Jungle Cruise in the comfort of your own home. Nowadays, you can watch them all in your home on opening weekend (with the exception of F9, which made audiences wait 4 weeks until an at home release).
So with all of these big movies coming available at home, what are the best options to enjoy movies in Spanish at home with the family?
Never fear!!! We are here to help you and recommend that you try the following services:
Netflix
The O.G. of streaming services. Long before all of the other services which are now populating our phones and smart TVs, Netflix was there. First as a DVD rental company, and then as the pioneer of home streaming. For most major movies on Netflix, you have the option of switching the audio to a different language including Spanish. The only drawback with Netflix is that as more movie studios launch their own streaming companies, many movies have left Netflix and gone to other places like Disney+ and HBO Max. However, if you enjoy Netflix originals, you should be in good shape.
Disney +
If there’s anyone who can compete with the 800lb giant that is Netflix, it is fellow giant, Disney. Disney+ is relatively new to the streaming game, but boy did it make a splash. Debuting in September 2019, Disney+ quickly amassed 50 million users within its first 6 months. It was quite possibly the finest product launch in the history of consumerism, beating out the likes of the launch of Apple’s iPhone and Sony’s PS2.
The beauty of Disney+ is that if you want to watch a classic like Cinderella or a new movie like Jungle Cruise or Luca, you watch it all in Spanish with Disney+.
Hulu
Next to Netflix, Hulu is one of the oldest streaming players on the block. Formerly owned a consortium of various studios, Hulu used to show movies from most major studios, even though they were predominantly focused on TV shows. Since Disney purchased most of the 20th Century Fox corporation, they acquired a majority interest in Hulu, revitalizing the company. Hulu’s movie offerings are geared more towards teens and adults, although they do have an excellent kids selection of movies.
TheaterEars
You might not be aware of this but you can watch movies in Spanish with your favorite app, TheaterEars. If a movie is activated for “Home Theater” on the TheaterEars app, you can simply download the movie track to your phone as you normally would. When you are ready to enjoy the movie, put on your headphones, push the play button in the app, and wait a few seconds for the app to sync. TheaterEars works across all platforms for at home listening. TheaterEars has a growing library of titles availalble to sync at home including new releases such as The Suicide Squad and Space Jam: A New Legacy as well as classics such as Joker, Aquaman, Hustlers, Batman vs. Superman, The LEGO movie and much more.
One thing to remember is that you can’t see the video on TheaterEars. It’s meant to be used when you are watching a movie on a streaming service, digital copy, or DVD/Blu-Ray in English and you have someone in your group who wants to listen to the movie at the same time in Spanish.
Pantaya
If you have a few bucks a month to pony up ($5.99 per month to be exact), Pantaya might be a good option for you. It has a good mix of original content and some recognizable titles. Pantaya is owned by Lionsgate (so if you like their content, this might be a good place). Plus they have ties with Eugenio Derbez, who has a Mexican comedic phenomenon. They offer a 7-day free trial if you are worried about commitments. A drawback is that Pantaya does not offer any movies that are currently available in movie theaters.
Tubi
Recently acquired by the Fox Corporation last year, Tubi has now entered into prime time viewing. The best thing about Tubi is that it’s free. Tubi offers access to tons of movies in Spanish. However the drawback is that Tubi is ad supported, so if you are watching a movie on Tubi be prepared for several commercial breaks. For true movie lovers, we know that watching a commercials takes you away from the movie and that movies are best enjoyed when you can truly get lost in a movie with no distractions or interruptions. Another drawback of Tubi is that most of their movies tend to be lower budget films.
Other rising services where you can watch movies in Spanish include Prende TV, Pluto TV, and Amazon Prime.
If you enjoy watching new release movies at home with your family, there’s never been a better time with all of the options available in the market.
